If You Ask Me

what I believe, I won’t loiter
in the science of it. Or the absurdity.
I know, I know, call it crazy—but I won’t
call it crazy. You’ll see it in my eyes
when my mouth quirks up with the same
faint smile Jesus must have worn when he told us
to love one another, and we started forgetting
to love one another, convinced it wasn’t enough
to love one another, as if there were any other way
than to love one another. So ask me
what I believe. You see, I took Jesus’ word for it:
When he told us to love one another, he meant
that’s really all there is to it.
