Pardon

As day folds into night
my thoughts turn dark
recalling my impatience,
my selfishness,
my indifference,
and then your small hand
curls into mine -
                a reminder of forgiveness,
                        of new life gifted -
gentling me like the egg
whites you carefully folded
into the batter this morning
to help make waffles, so
golden, airy and light.
