I planted a tree in my mind, expecting
the growth of feathered arms–svelte,
satin branches against steel bars.
I ate an apple down to its core, held
the seeds in my hot palm, and pressed
every last kernel into cave-floor cracks.
I emptied my canteen over the pit–
believing that, if I worked hard enough,
something might grow even in cold clay.
