Sea Baptism

Now every year if you return to this water, find familiar driftwood in their place and rock-weed necklaces dressing the shore.

Do you remember how the chilled sea snapped as you entered the cove?

A common tern split the air and dove through the waves and returned, a fish thick in its beak, silver and transfigured.

Is it possible to hold this light again?

When the water splashes your neck, dislodge the roots underfoot. Unhinge the clam shell, say yes, and sing.

A note from the author:

"Sea Baptism is an exploration of what it means to return to a time or place where you felt closer to the truth of who are you and who God is in the world. It asks its reader to return, again and again, no matter how many times necessary, to a spiritual foundation that is God, and the ways he demonstrates his presence in the material, created world. I wrote it in Maine while reflecting on my own baptism that took place in the sea."
