salt of the earth

as in seawater, medicating the burns of fighter pilots;

as in brine, turning olives from bitter wood into ripe food;

as in tears, pouring from browneyes at a graveside;

as in mineral-laced water, after a fevered night;

as in healing, and preserving, and feeling, and restoring;

as in everything that salt on the fields

and salt in the wounds

and deadly salt shackles

on a small grey bird

are not.
